In 1974, Bob and Phoebe Harper acquired a plot of land that would prove ideal for their passion and vision. Having discovered that where peaches will grow, grapes will grow, too, the Harper’s planted the first vines on the property in 1976. They aptly named the winery after the mountain the property sits on, Naked Mountain, and began to develop the property adding a winemaking facility and tasting room within the next few years. Bob and Phoebe were pioneers of VA wine, as some of the first commercial winemakers in a burgeoning industry. They continued to develop the winery and vineyard, garnering numerous awards including several Virginia Governor’s Cups, until 2010 when it was sold to Randy and Meagan Morgan.
A new beginning
Randy and Meagan Morgan are native to Virginia and attended college at Virginia Tech. While in college, they developed a palate and passion for wine from all over the world. After graduation, Randy and Meagan moved up to Northern Virginia to start a life and fell further in love with the Virginia winery scene. Upon visiting Naked Mountain Winery, they enjoyed the property, the history, and of course, the wines - and discovered the winery in Markham was for sale. Deciding to take a true leap of faith, and with the support of family and friends, they took the reins of Naked Mountain in August of 2010.
A Virginia Classic since 1974
Known for our Barrel Fermented Chardonnay and Bordeaux style blend, Raptor Red, Randy and Meagan continued the traditions of Naked Mountain. Our Chardonnay has even been served to two Presidents in the White House! The property has gone through a couple renovations and expansions to meet the growing attraction and business brought in from up and down the East coast. Great VA wine, beautiful views, and excellent service make Naked Mountain Winery a true Virginia wine treasure.
